fun is a necessity

fun is a necessity

This excerpt is from my book The Way of the Karma Yogi.

In our day to day life, as we get bombarded with obligations and distractions, we forget the core essence of our existence: enjoying ourselves and having fun. Fun is a necessity, a basic need for us to cruise through our lives in a happier way. As Gordon B. Hinckley advised, “In all of living, have much fun and laughter. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured.”

Fun is unconditional; it’s not meant to be a luxury or commodity that only the luckiest people amongst us can buy. If we’re not having fun, our lives will be short and limited. Our brief time on this planet is an opportunity for us to have fun in our lives. Yes, it’s all about fulfilling our purpose and living our best selves, but if isn’t fun, we’re doing something wrong.

Now would be a good time to sit down, relax and think: What have been the most fun moments in my life? Go through the experiences you’ve had so far in your life and make a list of those experiences. Once you have a list, read it and ask yourself why they were fun for you. As you go through your list, you’ll figure out some patterns and become aware of your primary interests. Congratulations, this has been one of the most important introspections of your life; now you’ve figured out what brings genuine joy and happiness to your life.

Whether it is your love for writing, running, photography, going out and socializing, or traveling and exploring new places, now you know what’s the channel that contributes to your happiness. You have to make a conscious decision to never block this channel. Always keep it active, and keep doing the things that bring joy to you.

When you do these activities daily, you will experience what I call ‘abundant fun.’ You never run out of it. And once you achieve that state, other people or circumstances do not become a source of fun for you, YOU yourself are the biggest source of happiness and fun for you.
