overcome negative emotions with gratitude

It’s easy to get engulfed in negativity and immerse ourselves in emotions that cause us harm in the long-run. If we’re not careful, external stimuli such as news, social media, the people that we associate with can have a negative impact on our lives.

One way to become more aware with the good and positive things happening in our lives so that we magnify our positive emotions and equip ourselves to combat negative emotions, whether they be fear, anxiety, envy, resentment or distress, is to practice gratitude consistently.

There are several studies that back the holistic benefits of cultivating gratitude. For instance, The Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley conducted a research study involving three hundred adult men and women who were seeking mental health counseling at a university. The majority of people in this cohort were struggling with anxiety and depression. After the experiment concluded, it was reported that the group that was asked to practice gratitude had a significant improvement in their mental health.

Also, according to the UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Center, “regularly expressing gratitude (the quality of being thankful and the readiness to show appreciation) literally changes the molecular structure of the brain, keeps the gray matter functioning, and makes us healthier and happier.”

The bottom line is that grateful people are healthier and happier people. And that’s why it makes total sense to start practicing gratitude and making it a consistent habit in our own lives.

PS: Practicing gratitude is not only a great way to incorporate mindfulness and awareness into our daily routine, but it also acts as a form of self-care and reorients us back to our humanness.
