“True freedom is an inward state of being. Once it is attained, no situation in the world can bind one or limit one’s freedom.” — Jack Canfield

Today is July 4th, which marks the occasion of Independence Day (colloquially the Fourth of July) in the US. For the unversed, this federal holiday commemorates the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted (July 4, 1776) and the United States officially became its own nation. People in America celebrate their nation’s birthday with festivals, parades, fireworks, barbecues, and other festive activities.

So, let’s spend a few moments today to meditate on the notion of freedom and what it truly stands for, and how we can achieve and enjoy independence in its purest form in the long haul.

True freedom is not something that can be found in the external world, but rather, it is a state that exists within each of us. It is a deep sense of liberation that goes beyond the physical and material realm. When we truly attain this inner freedom, no situation or circumstance in the world can hold us back or restrict our choices.

Imagine a bird soaring through the open sky, unrestricted by any boundaries or limitations. It flies with effortless grace, exploring the vastness of the heavens. Similarly, when we tap into our inner freedom, we become like that bird, unaffected by the chains of the outside world. We possess the power to rise above any challenges or obstacles that come our way.

This inner freedom stems from a profound understanding that our true essence lies within, not in the external circumstances of our lives. It is a recognition that our thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions shape our reality, and we have the ability to choose how we respond to any situation. No matter what may happen around us, we retain the power to determine our own path and make decisions aligned with our authentic selves.

When we cultivate this inward state of being, we become aware of the limitless possibilities that exist within us. We realize that we are not defined by our past or confined by societal expectations. Our true freedom allows us to embrace our passions, follow our dreams, and live life on our own terms.

Furthermore, this inner freedom liberates us from the chains of fear, doubt, and self-imposed limitations. We no longer seek validation or approval from others because we have found our own sense of worth and acceptance. We are free to express ourselves authentically, without fear of judgment or rejection.

It is important to note that attaining true freedom does not mean that we isolate ourselves in a mountain or a forest and/or live in a state of complete detachment from the world. On the contrary, it allows us to fully engage with life and make a positive impact on those around us. When we are free from the shackles of external circumstances, we can tap into our innate creativity, wisdom, and compassion to contribute meaningfully to the world.

In conclusion, true freedom is not dependent on external factors but is an inward state of being. It empowers us to transcend limitations, choose our own paths, and live authentically. When we cultivate this inner freedom, we become unstoppable, capable of creating a life of purpose, joy, and fulfillment. Remember, your freedom resides within you, waiting to be discovered and unleashed upon the world.

As James Baldwin put it, "Freedom is not something that anybody can be given. Freedom is something people take, and people are as free as they want to be."
